Vincent Van Gogh - Branches of Almonds

Luckily for me, I always read the comments added by my Design Team and Followers daily. Jackie had posted this comment.
Jackie said...

Hi!! I just post my LO at my blog! Hugs!

So, I took the time to look at her layout, which was stunning, she used another of Van Goghs paintings 'Branches of Almond' to showcase her home....... and it was too beautiful to not hang in the ARTastic Gallery.

Jackie - There Is No Place Like Home

This is what Jackie posted on her blog:-
My dear Friend Shazza, is hosting this great challenge at her blog...Is about creating a LO based on Vincent Van Gogh paintings..for my My LO I choose "Branches of Almond" because It reminds me my beautiful Island!

Jackie you have done a fantastic job of your layout and how beautiful is 'Puerto Rico'. Sadly, I can't enter you for the 'Starry Night' challenge, but your work was too beautiful to be left out of the gallery :) I love the colors and how you have sectioned it all off. Fantastic!! - Shazza

Artist for October is Vincent van Gogh - Starry Night

Vincent Willem van Gogh (30 March 1853 – 29 July 1890) was a Dutch Post-Impressionist artist whose paintings have had a far reaching influence on 20th century art.

Many of his pieces—including his numerous self portraits, landscapes, portraits and sunflowers—are among the world's most recognizable and expensive works of art. Little appreciated during his lifetime, his reputation increased in the years after his death. Today, he is regarded as one of history's greatest artists and an important contributor to the foundations of modern art. His younger brother Theo continually provided financial and emotional support. Their lifelong friendship, and most of what is known of Vincent's thoughts and theories of art, is recorded in the hundreds of letters they began exchanging in August 1872.

Van Gogh suffered from anxiety and was unsettled for most of his life. He spent his early adulthood working for a firm of art dealers in The Hague, London and Paris, after which he taught in England. An early vocational aspiration was to become a pastor and preach the gospel; he eventually worked as a missionary in a poor mining region in Belgium. In 1879, he began to sketch people from the local Belgian community drawing scenes from ordinary life. In 1880, he took formal art classes, which included the study of anatomy, still-life and landscape. He began to paint in 1882 with the encouragement of his cousin-in-law anton Mauve. By 1885, he was living in Nuenen, where he painted his first major work, the Potatoe Eaters. At the time, his palette consisted mainly of sombre earth tones and showed no sign of the vivid coloration that distinguished his later work. In March 1886, he moved to Paris where he discovered the French Impressionists and made his artistic breakthrough. His work developed rapidly and grew brighter in color. He quickly developed a uniquely recognizable style, one fully realized by the time he departed for Arles in February 1888, having painted over 200 paintings.

Van Gogh did not begin his career as an artist until he was about 27. During his last ten years he produced more than 2,000 pieces, including around 900 paintings as well as 1,100 drawings and sketches. Most of his best-known works were produced during his final two years, amid recurrent bouts of mental illness. He died at the age of 37 from a self inflicted gunshot wound.

The inspiration for your layouts will come from this sample of his art work
called 'Starry Night'

We have a great card entry from.........

Jessica Germaine - On Another Starry Night

This is what Jessica had to say..........
I'm in the process of making my Christmas cards, so
when I saw the
painting, it made me think of
another 'starry' night.
The words at the top say:
On another starry night.... "When they saw
the
star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy."
Matthew 2:10
I used my cricut almost exculsively
for this one. I used cuts from
Winter Woodlands for
the church, houses and the trees. and from Joys
of
the Season for the stars(tiny snowflakes.) The moon
is a simple
circle. I popped up the moon, and the
trees (after putting glitter glue on them), and
I
cut 4 or 5 of the larger 'stars' and just layered
them on top of
each other. I have colored all over
the front with the clear Spica
pen, so there is a
shimmery effect all over the card.

I hope you like it.

Hi Jessica! What a lovely Christmas card using Van Gogh's 'Starry Night' as
your theme. I love the cuts you used from the 'Winter Woodlands set, and love the
glittery trees. Actually, this has given me an idea for some Christmas cards
aswell. Well done!! and thanks for participating :) - Shazza

Look at this Fab layout, from another 'Newbie"......

Robin Jenkins - Beautiful Dreamer

This is what Robin had to say.........
Hi Shazza,
I guess it would help to talk a little about how the painting inspired me to do this layout. When I first logged onto your site and saw Starry Night which we've all seen before, I looked at it in a different way, because now I was looking for the inspiration to do my own interpretation. I immediately thought of this picture that I had of my daughter, Temple, and knew it would be perfect to convey the idea of dreaming on a starry night.

Great Layout Robin, love your title with the different fonts. Love those swirly stars and the colors you have used in this layout blend together so well. I wonder what 'Temple' is dreaming of...... Great interpretation! Well done!! -Shazza

Heres another great layout from another newbie ....

Megan - MAaron

This is what Megan said..........I was inspired by the brush strokes and the swirls. I love that about VanGogh - that you can see all the brush strokes. I had this photo of my daughter that I had done a Lomo action on in photoshop. I loved that the photo had dark blues and purples and bright oranges. So, it went perfectly with the starry night color scheme. As I was working on the page I was thinking about what to title it. I was going to say something about the cantaloupe she is eating, but decided that Starry Night was Van Gogh's masterpiece and my daughter is my masterpiece so it is a perfect fit! There are microbeads on the background and sparkles on the stickles of the letters that echo the stars.

Hi Megan, I love the colorful photo up against the dark background, it looks cool! A perfect title for your page. Well done!! Thanks for participating - Shazza

Another 'Starry Night' inspired layout!! From......

Nicole Goodwin - Owl

This is what Nicole said........I thought of the night not too long ago when I saw an owl (Bob or Terry?) in our neighborhood. I love using stars on my scrapbook pages and have a million star brads so I decided to use those for embellishments. My journaling, which I wrote in caps because I love the font in the Where the Wild Things Are previews, says, Seeing this owl in our neighborhood put me in the Halloween spirit. Although the pictures aren't so great, when I see them I remember the night Captain and I followed it as it flew silently from rooftop to rooftop.

What a great 'Starry Night' page, I love your story about following the owl around the neighborhood. I'm glad you decided to have a go at the challenge, so thanks for joining in. Love the addition of the Halloween embelishments. Well done! - Shazza

Looksee! Looksee! Another piece of Art work from......

Michelle Beeby - Sleep Tight

I kept looking at the picture and thinking "I can't make that into a page?" so I softened the colours and used some of the objects as a guide for placement and I think it came out ok.
The journaling reads.......
Such a busy day playing dress up with your big brothers and their tools. It was just time to have a nap, so I hope you... SLEEP TIGHT
Thanks for looking!! - Michelle Beeby

What a fantastic take on the challenge, love the 'Starry Night' feel coming through. The title font looks fantastic and the pic is gorgeous. Well done!! - Shazza

Look at this Fab layout, from...

Vicki Benoit - Bedtime Stories

Here's what Vicki had to say........ One of my fave paintings of all time, I love the dreaminess of the swirly brush strokes. So that's where my inspiration started, with my background. I then added the muslin mat to add to the dreamy feel, and some blingy stars just because!

Wow! Vicki, I really love your take on the challenge, it does give you that dreamy feel! A great photo and title, the perfect addition :) Well done!! - Shazza

Have a look at this next fab layout......

Robin Lachnit - Night Owl

This is what Robin posted on her blog site...........I took my time painting my cardstock with acrylics, glitter, pearl powders, and a few mixed in embossing powders for added sparkle and gloss. The title "night owl" doesn't stand out much on the photo but on the page its easy to see the purple tinted wire spelling out "night". I used an owl embellishment from the Label Tulip September kit and all papers and the purple tag are from my stash. I chose this photo in particular because i thought I looked up to no good, and at night, thats usually the case so I cropped and stuck it in.

How good is this arty layout piece Robin, I just love it, you have really captured the feel of 'Starry Night' in the sparkly and glossy background :) ...... love the pic of you!! Thanks for playing along and having a go - cheers Shazza

Another great 'Starry Night' inspired layout....... this time from

Sonia Bowers - Knight in Shining Armour

This is what Sonia had to say....
Shazza loved this inspiration, did it the first weekend, but got waylaid in emailing.
Sorry the image doesn't show my brads in it or the journaling, it's a bit dark and overcast at the moment to re photograph.
I had fun with this challenge even if my title is a little cheesy.

Hi Sonia! I love your take on the challenge, Love the title 'Knight' with the heart locket attached. I love the journalling when it comes from the heart (its not to cheesy for me!) ........................... and how you have used a play on the words Starry Starry Knight (Night!). Fantastic! Well done!! - Shazza

Wednesday 7 October 2009

WOW! Another fantastic layout to share, this time from.....

Natalie Elphinstone - O Holy Night

I recently stumbled across your blog and was immediately inspired by Van Gogh's Starry Night to scrap an off-the-page project.
With Christmas fast approaching I was reminded of that other starry night in the nativity story.
I drew inspiration from Van Gogh's sky with it's colours, swirls and stars, and also the silhouette of the town (in this case, Bethlehem). Thanks for the great challenge - Natalie

WOW! Natalie!! Thats a fantastic OTP, its beautiful. Love what you have done :) Love how you have done your swirls, not sure if you have used texture paste and painted it... but it looks awesome. What a great art piece :) - Shazza

Look at this Fab layout, from...

Jacqui Miles - Go Red for Womens

Look at this Fab layout, from...

Marisa Page - You're My Star

Here's what Marisa had to say.........I have done a digi layout for this months ARTastic challenge. I loved the colours in the painting 'Starry Night' so I used that for my inspiration, also the swirls/circles in the sky.

Wow!! Marisa, I think this is our first digital entry, and what a beauty :) You really have kept with the color scheme, love your photo and all your little digi elements. Well done - Shazza

Today, we have another great layout from.....

Monday 5 October 2009

Another layout to hang in the gallery............

Brenda Wyllie - Wizard

This is what Brenda said..........I was really inspired by the Gogh’s Starry Night theme. This my eldest son dressed as a Wizard. My stars are glow-in-the-dark stars which were on the ceiling of his daughter’s bedroom. I really liked the swirls too. I thought the owls would be ideal to place in the tree lol.

Do you know I was thinking the other day......'Starry night' would be great for a Halloween Theme, I wonder if anyone will do one? Your 'Wizard ' is right on the mark. Your paper swirls are they Quilling? (if thats the right name!). Love the white silhouette tree with the owls and the little black cat sitting at the bottom. Well done - Shazza
